Shane Satterfield has been employed with Ohio Valley Goodwill as a Veterans Specialist for almost a year. Shane is a veteran himself who served in the Marines. He retired from the Corps as a result of a grenade explosion he suffered during the Gulf war in the early 1990’s. Following his service, he then went to work for Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS), working with kids with behavioral challenges. His classroom experiences involved working with kids from 2nd to the 12th grades. Shane’s role was to help kids experiencing difficulties to cope more appropriately and to maintain their natural classroom setting. The individualized support and attention he provided helped the children learn more appropriate classroom behaviors which then enabled them to stay in an integrated educational environment. ” It was very important to me to give the children another avenue to allow them to develop in the most natural setting vs. being segregated or displaced.”
Following his tenure with CPS, Shane then went on to work with the Hamilton County Community Action Agency. His efforts at this agency involved promoting immunizations in low-income neighborhoods. His efforts resulted in the implementation of five different community-wide immunization drives which ultimately helped more than 2200 children to receive the proper immunizations. This initiative was funded through the Ohio State Governor’s office and was undertaken to promote sociological research.
After this experience, Shane decided that he wanted to pursue his academic career and enrolled at the University of Cincinnati (UC), and began studying Criminal Justice in pursuit of his Bachelor’s degree. He also made it onto the UC football team as a Running Back during this time. Initially completing his Associate’s degree and then, his Bachelor’s degree in 2000, Shane returned to school in 2010 and obtained his second Bachelor’s degree and then finally, completed his Master’s in 2013 in Social Work.
During his academic career, Shane was selected to serve on a local and national organization, the National Association of Black Social Workers, as 1st Vice President. Shane also served as the President of Student Veterans of America organization while attending the University of Cincinnati. At UC, Shane was inducted into the Phi Alpha Honor Society and is a distinguished brother of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
When not working at Goodwill, Shane also owns and operates his own landscaping and residential cleaning company.
In his role at Goodwill, Shane works closely with veterans who are currently struggling with homelessness. ” In the Marine Corps, we have an expression we live by- we never leave a man down. It’s how I feel about working with my fellow vets. I want to do what I can to get them back on their feet and to help them become self-sufficient,” said Satterfield.
Goodwill provides transitional housing, skills training, job readiness and placement services as well as on-going case management for our nation’s heroes, our military veterans. Each year, Goodwill helps approximately 700 veterans to receive services to enable them to get back on their feet.
Goodwill is grateful to Shane for his commitment and leadership in working with and supporting his fellow veterans in our community.
