Saturday, April 26th marked the 2014 PigAbilities picnic celebration event held at Friendship Park, along the banks of the Ohio River. “PigAbilities” is a featured event of the annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon and is an 8-week training program that supports athletes with disabilities to get ready for the big event. Ohio Valley Goodwill has been a sponsor and active participant of the “PigAbilities” training program since its inception by the Community Ambassadors Resource Alliance (CARA) in 2013. Designed to help individuals learn about the importance of fitness, good nutrition and making healthy life decisions, PigAbilities has grown to support over 75 athletes.
For the past two years, Goodwill’s volunteer Service Guild has sponsored the celebratory picnic which is held on the last day of training prior to the big Race on May 3rd. This year’s menu featured sandwiches from Subway as well as a delicious fruit salad and homemade mac and cheese. CARA Executive Director, Debbie Moorehous with the support of PigAbilities coach, Karen Bruce and a team of volunteers coordinate the event which celebrates the individuals goals and achievements of the participating athletes. “Ohio Valley Goodwill is so pleased to have participants as part of the PigAbilities training program this year and are very grateful to our wonderful Service Guild for their support of the annual picnic celebration,” said Sharon Hannon, Marketing Specialist.
The PigAbilities race takes place on Saturday, May 3rd and will be the crowning achievement of this year’s training efforts for these determined athletes. The public is welcome and encouraged to cheer on the PigAbilities team on Saturday, May 3rd at 1:00 pm at the start of the Race at Great American Ball Park. Watching the PigAbilities runners receive their hard-earned medals at the end of the Race is a memorable moment not to be missed.
