The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) of Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries participated in the annual fall Stand Down held on Friday, October 11th at the Bellevue Veterans Club in Northern Kentucky. The annual event is held each year as a way to draw attention to the needs of homeless veterans and to offer a variety of services for veterans.
The phrase ” Stand Down” comes from an old term relating to a time when military personnel could have their personal needs attended to. This year’s event was sponsored by the Bellevue Veterans Club, the Cincinnati Veterans Administration, DAV, and Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries.
During the event, veterans had the opportunity to receive services from over 30 providers including: medical, dental, eye care, social services, employment, career opportunities, and legal aid. Members of the Veterans Administration were also on hand to provide benefits counseling. An opening ceremony took place at 9:00 am and a free hot lunch was provided from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm sponsored by the Bellevue Veterans Club.
Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries has been offering services to homeless and jobless veterans for over 20 years. To qualify for Goodwill’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP), an individual must be homeless and be available for work. ” We are always so pleased to be a part of this very important event to provide services for our veterans and to join in with other service providers to help meet the needs of our veterans,” said Bill Darnell, Goodwill’s Grants Manager. Last year (2013), Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries provided service to more than 750 veterans and homeless individuals.
