Friday, October 12th marked the 10th Anniversary of the Northern Kentucky Stand Down for veterans, an annual event that brings together multiple organizations who join together each year to assist homeless veterans in the Greater Cincinnati area. Held annually at the Bellevue Veterans Club, the special event brings together many groups for the purpose of assisting homeless veterans with their needs. “We work with the Bellevue Veterans Club each year to plan this special event as a way to draw attention to the needs of homeless veterans and to organize dozens of service organizations in one location, on one-day to serve these veterans,” said Bill Darnell, Goodwill’s Grants Manager. This year more than two dozen service providers were on hand to assist veterans from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Ohio Valley Goodwill is one of the major sponsors of the annual Stand Down event. In addition to Goodwill Industries and the Bellevue Veterans Club other the sponsor includes the Cincinnati Veterans Administration. The phrase “stand down” comes from an old military term relating to a time that military personnel can have their personal needs attended to. Throughout the day, services were available to veterans at the Stand Down including medical, dental, eye care, social services, employment, and career opportunities. Members of the Veterans Administration were also available to provide benefits counseling. The annual Stand Down is organized each year in Northern Kentucky as a way to focus on the needs of homeless veterans and meet their needs and provide services for them. “We are always so grateful to our sponsoring organizations for assisting us with this event because it helps to reach so many veterans in one location and it provides much needed services,” commented Darnell. Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries has been providing services for homeless veterans since the early 1990’s and has been active in the Northern Kentucky region for over ten years. Ohio Valley Goodwill recognizes all of our nation’s veterans and thanks them for their support and service to our country.
