The 2016 Transition Boot Camp is coming up this Friday, October 28th and Ohio Valley Goodwill is pleased to once again be a major sponsor for the upcoming event taking place at the Sharonville Convention Center. the Transition Boot Camp is a one-day conference for parents/caregivers, family members, educators and other professionals working with youth/young adults who have developmental disabilities who are interested in transition preparation from high school to adult life. The one day conference event is followed with multiple in-depth booster sessions on transition topics throughout the year. The Transition Boot Camp conference and vendor fair helps families and educators better prepare for the many transitions that youth experience when moving from school to community work and life. The planning committee includes Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries and consists of staff from many community agencies, county boards of DD Services, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the Cincinnati University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.
This year, the planning committee is pleased to welcome Scott Osterfeld, as the opening speaker who will get the conference started with a dynamic presentation on ” The Art of Community Connecting.” Last year, Scott led one of the breakout sessions and attendees loved the session so much that the committee decided to move the session to the keynote slot so that everyone could hear Scott speak.
The Transition Boot Camp will have three breakout sessions this year, with each breakout session offering five presentations. Topics to be covered at this year’s event include: Transition IEPs, Behavior Supports, Post-secondary Education Options, Employment, Community Inclusion, Advocacy, DD Services, Social Security and Medicaid as well as Guardianship. A fourth breakout session in the afternoon is specific to counties (Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren) to let attendees know what services are available in their county re: transition and community living.
In addition, the Boot Camp will offer a vendor fair from 11 am until 2 pm where attendees can connect with various service providers, recreation programs, educational programs and transportation providers. Ohio Valley Goodwill has always been an exhibitor at the Boot Camp vendor fair event and this year, the organization is delighted to announce that Travis Smith, Community Access Program Supervisor, will be a first-time presenter in partnership with three other organizations to discuss the topic of ” Creating a Meaningful Day in the Community: Options for Fulfillment Outside of Community Employment.”
Ohio Valley Goodwill is proud to be a Gold Sponsor of the 2016 Transition Boot Camp event and looks forward to the conference on October 28th. Watch for highlights from this year’s sold-out Transition Boot Camp coming soon.
