Cincinnati Olympian and fitness advocate, Julie Isphording graciously agreed to share her winning smile and enthusiastic endorsement of Ohio Valley Goodwill with the Greater Cincinnati community by starring in one of the organization’s new television commercials. Julie is a long-time Goodwill donor and shopper; and most importantly, an advocate for the organization and its service mission. Julie is well-known in Greater Cincinnati for her leadership role of the century old Thanksgiving Day Race and for her inspirational speeches nation-wide. These two roles led her to Goodwill.
In 2010, Julie was once again planning that year’s Thanksgiving Day Race; the theme of which was ” + One;” and through a conversation with Board of Directors Chairman, Charlie Wright, was inspired to begin a partnership with Goodwill. The new relationship would soon become known as the ” +One Donation Challenge” which has become the largest race-related coat donation drives in the country.
Over the past four years the winning partnership has collected more than 20,000 lbs. of donated coats, jackets, hats and scarves, at the Goodwill donation stations at the starting line of the Thanksgiving Day Race. These generous donations are sold through the organization’s network of retail stores. The proceeds support Goodwill’s employment and training programs which serve more than 3000 Greater Cincinnatians with disabilities and our nation’s veterans yearly.
Through the course of the partnership, Julie has become an important spokesperson for Goodwill’s mission and has come to know some of the staff team members as well as the individuals served. ” It’s a cause that I can truly believe in,” Julie said. ” It’s amazing to know that by donating the things that we no longer need, we are helping someone go to work in our community. The best part of course, is finding out about the real stories of the people who are helped by Goodwill,” said Isphording.
