It’s Time for the End of Summer Closet Clean-Out!

It’s that time again “” the days are getting shorter, the weather is cooling down, and fall is right around the corner! But before you can fully transition to pumpkin spice season, it’s important to swap out your summer clothes and get your closet ready for fall.

Follow these five easy steps to make your end of summer closet clean-out a success:

Start with a blank slate

The first step is to remove everything “” and we mean everything “” from your closet. Lay all your clothes, accessories, shoes, hangers, and bins on the floor or bed. Having an empty closet will make it a lot easier to clean, organize, and take inventory of all your stuff!

Divide items into piles

Next, sort through each article of clothing, placing them into either a ” keep” or ” donate” pile. To decide whether or not to keep an item, ask yourself these questions:

  • Have you worn it in the past 12 months?
  • Is it still your style?
  • Does it fit?
  • Does it make you feel good?
  • Do you like having it in your closet?
  • If it’s a summer outfit, do you plan on wearing it next year?

If you answered ” no” to any of the above questions, consider donating the item to Goodwill! There’s no sense in keeping something in your closet that doesn’t bring you joy “”  it’s just taking up valuable space!

Store summer stuff the right way

Any summer clothes that you want to wear next year will need to be stored to make room for fall outfits in your closet. Make sure your off-season clothes are clean and folded before storing them in a plastic bin. Tossing in a dryer sheet or cedar bag will keep your clothes smelling fresh when it’s time to transition back to warm weather clothing!

Check kids’ closets, too!

Did you know? On average, children grow out of their clothes every six months! Just like you did for your closet, take everything out of your children’s closets and sort each item one-by-one.

Due to frequent growth spurts, most kids can’t wear the same clothes from year to year. But sometimes, older kids can pass down outfits to their younger siblings. If hand-me-downs aren’t an option, donate the outfit to Goodwill!

Anyone who has struggled to get their kids dressed for the day knows how important it is to stay organized. Plus, with extra space in their closet or dresser drawers, it will be easier for kids to keep their rooms clean!

Donate to Goodwill

Finally, take everything in your ” donate” pile and bring it to your nearest Goodwill donation site. Don’t wait to donate “” there’s no time like the present!

Go Green with Goodwill!

When you donate to Goodwill, you’re helping your local community and the planet at the same time. That’s because the proceeds generated from goods donated to Goodwill help support life-changing employment services and job training for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Plus, by donating your secondhand goods instead of throwing them away, you’re supporting Goodwill’s environmental sustainability efforts to reduce waste through repurposing and recycling.
