How to Honor Veterans on the Fourth of July

Independence Day is just around the corner, giving us all an opportunity to celebrate our freedom and honor our nation’s veterans! There are many ways to acknowledge the veterans in and outside of your community, whether or not you know a veteran personally.

As we prepare for another fun-filled Fourth of July weekend, here are some great ways to honor veterans:

Assemble a Veteran Care Package

One way to support veterans in need in your community is by putting together a care package with everyday essentials. Get your friends and family together and collect items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm, sunscreen, and other daily necessities that can be useful. Check out an organization such as Operation Gratitude or look for support services within your community that accept donations.

Write Thank-You Notes

Sending thank-you notes to veterans is one of the simplest acts of kindness. Gather a group of friends and host a thank-you note writing party before your Fourth of July celebrations. You could write notes of appreciation to veterans you know personally or others within your community. It is a great way to acknowledge the selflessness of the brave women and men who have served our country!

Visit a Local Veterans Memorial

Another meaningful way to honor veterans this Fourth of July is to visit a local veterans memorial. Chances are there are one or two memorial sites near you where you can honor the heroes who gave so much for our freedoms.

Support Veterans in their Journey to Employment Success

Many veterans continue to face obstacles in the transition between active service and civilian life. It’s an unfortunate fact that some veterans are at an increased risk for experiencing homelessness due to a complex set of factors, which may include unstable employment and a lack of support networks.

At Ohio Valley Goodwill, we’re honored to serve local veterans after they have served us. Our specialized services for veterans help provide the resources, education, and training veterans need to join the workforce, provide for their families, and achieve financial stability.

Thanks to your shopping and donation support, Goodwill is able to help veterans in our community successfully return to civilian life and achieve both personal and vocational fulfillment!
