In today’s job market, job seekers aren’t afraid to ask for what they want “” and they want more than just a paycheck. The important role a career plays in one’s overall well-being is becoming increasingly clear, and it’s creating a new dynamic for employers. But the idea that ” a job is more than a job” isn’t new to us at Ohio Valley Goodwill!
Goodwill’s mission is to change lives through the power of work, helping people empower themselves through career coaching, job skills training, and other vocational services. In fact, Ohio Valley Goodwill helps to match individuals with disabilities and our nation’s veterans with career opportunities that best suit them by providing the skills training and long-term support they need to succeed. The idea seems simple, but it’s about so much more than just the job!
Humans naturally seek out a sense of belonging. We need supportive people around us to cheer our wins and encourage us to pick ourselves up and try again when we fail. Jobs can help to fulfill that need! Many people find their closest friends in the workplace, and it feeds an overall sense of happiness and self-esteem when we’re surrounded by people who care about us, and whom we care for in return.
In 2018, the Harvard Business Review surveyed its employees to determine what they value most. The results revealed three areas, or ” buckets” that drove motivation: career, community, and cause.
Successful employers provide a path for career advancement and growth. This fulfills the ” career” area, which feeds pride by allowing people to use their strengths and to really shine at what they do. These employers also create an environment that allows employees to feel safe, respected, and connected. That’s the ” community” bucket. Lastly, employees want to believe in what they’re doing. That’s ” cause.”
When workers experience all three motivators, they’re more productive and happier overall. That’s what a good career can provide, and it spills over into the community outside work. We all benefit when everyone has the opportunity to find meaningful employment!
The right job does exist, and no matter your skillset or interests, it is possible to check all three boxes in order to feel truly fulfilled. Ohio Valley Goodwill works every day to make it happen through vocational programs and services that help people pave their way to success.
Everyone deserves the dignity of meaningful employment, and you can support job seekers in your community by shopping at Goodwill’s retail stores and donating your unneeded items to Goodwill. We invite you to participate in our cycle of success and become a job creator in your community today!
