‘Tis the season to spruce up your living space with festive décor! From trees to lights to garlands, there’s no shortage of ways to transform your home into a winter wonderland. Best of all, you can ” deck the halls” on a budget when you shop at Goodwill for all your winter decorating needs.
Take a look at these three fun and easy holiday decorating projects you can accomplish with a little help from Ohio Valley Goodwill:
Minimalist lampshade wreath
Greet your visitors this holiday season with a merry wreath on your front door. One popular trend is the ” minimalist wreath,” which can be made from upcycled lampshades found at Goodwill, as seen in this tutorial from Amidst The Chaos. Remove the fabric surrounding the lampshade, and you’ll have a circular (or square) base for your wreath. Cover the base with washi tape in a neutral color like silver and gold. Then, you can attach accent pieces such as pinecones, holly berries, sprigs of greenery or flowers, ribbons, or tassels using a hot glue gun or wire.
Waterless Snow Globe centerpieces
Turn your home into a magical winter scene with DIY snow globes! These waterless versions are fun to shake, and they won’t spell trouble if they’re accidentally broken by kids. Start by shopping at Goodwill for glass jars and containers in all different sizes and shapes. Then, gather up miniature items to put inside your snow globe, like bottle brush trees, pine cones, acorns, and small animal figurines or mini snowmen. Glue these items to the inside of the container’s lid with superglue. Add some artificial snow (you can purchase this at a craft store) to the container. Finally, screw the lid (with items glued on) back onto the container and turn it upside down. Voilà “”now you have easy DIY snow globes you can display with pride on your holiday mantle or table!
Upcycled sweater stockings
Stockings are a beloved Christmas decoration and tradition, but it can be difficult to find store-bought stockings at a budget-friendly price. If you’re feeling crafty, you can make your own custom stockings with a gently-loved wool sweater from a thrift store like Goodwill. Stop by your local Goodwill store to stock up on 100% wool sweaters in coordinating colors like gray, ivory, and red. We always have a huge selection of sweaters ready to be repurposed!
To make a sweater stocking, you’ll first need to ” felt” your wool sweaters by shrinking them. Wash the sweaters on the hot water setting, then dry them on the highest heat setting. Your sweaters will come out of the dryer much smaller and denser, but this way, they won’t unravel when you cut them. Next, using a paper stencil, cut out two layers of the sweater fabric in the shape of a stocking. Then, hand-stitch or use a sewing machine to sew the edges together, leaving an opening at the top of the stocking. For detailed instructions, check out this tutorial. Depending on the size of your sweater, you could make two to three stockings out of one sweater!
