Labor Day is right around the corner, and people around the country are gearing up for a long weekend break. However, we at Ohio Valley Goodwill would like to remind you that Labor Day is not just a day off; it’s a meaningful opportunity to recognize the life-changing power of work!
First celebrated on September 5th, 1882, in New York City, Labor Day was rooted in the need to recognize the many contributions workers have made to our country. As years passed, more states began to celebrate the holiday. In 1884, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September an official national holiday, Labor Day!
For many people, the main benefit of a job is earning a steady income. But there are also countless other intangible benefits of employment. For people who face barriers to employment, such as individuals with disabilities and veterans, having a job provides much more than a paycheck; it provides independence, self-sufficiency, and community inclusion and belonging. Meaningful employment can change lives for the better. That’s the power of work!
Ohio Valley Goodwill focuses on breaking down barriers to work by offering valuable job skills training, employment services, and other support programs to help individuals obtain and maintain meaningful community employment.
From career exploration to resume and cover letter help, job coaching, and on-the-job worksite supports, we help individuals prepare for personal and vocational success. Learn more about the services we offer on our Services page.
Every time you shop at an Ohio Valley Goodwill retail store or make a donation, you’re supporting the power of work in your community! Choosing Goodwill makes an important difference in Cincinnati, and we’re grateful for your support.
