On Wednesday, June 26th, Goodwill’s CARE participants and staff members were once again a welcome sight for runners participating in the 2013 Fraternal Order of Police Torch Run in support of Special Olympics, sponsored by The Kroger Company. Goodwill’s Center for Advocacy, Recreation and Education (CARE) participants enthusiastically volunteered to pass out water to the thirsty runners as they passed the organization’s corporate headquarters in the Village of Woodlawn. The annual Torch Run begins in downtown Cincinnati and finishes in Springdale covering 16 miles in length. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Ohio. The annual intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects have two goals: to raise money and to gain awareness for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Ohio, along with providing officers visibility while giving back to their respective communities. The police volunteers enjoyed talking and laughing with the CARE individuals as they took a moment to catch their breath and get some water. Goodwill’s CARE program is designed to provide a variety of personal development activities for participants which includes community volunteerism. The Torch Run offered the perfect opportunity for CARE participants to reach out to members of the Cincinnati police in their efforts to raise funds for individuals with disabilities. ” We are very proud of the many community activities that our participants choose to support,” said Leslie McCurley, Asst. Director of DD Services. ” It really allows the individuals we serve the opportunity to enjoy the feeling of giving back to their community,” added McCurley. Ohio Valley Goodwill is very pleased to support the Cincinnati police officers during the 2013 Torch Run event and thanks them for their service to the community and efforts on behalf of the Special Olympics organization.
