Earth Day is Monday, April 22, 2024, and there’s no better time to show respect to our planet! Earth Day was created in the spring of 1970 to raise awareness for the need to preserve our planet for generations to come.
Before the first Earth Day, there were no U.S. legal or federal regulations in place to enforce environmental protection. By December 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was formed to protect human health and the environment.
Today, Earth Day brings together people around the world to celebrate our planet and work together to ensure a bright future.
So, how can you take action on Earth Day 2024? We have a few ideas:
One of the best ways to honor the Earth is to enjoy the great outdoors! It’s all too easy to spend time on our screens. Take a hike, plan a picnic, go bird watching, or simply sit outside and soak up the sunshine. While you do, take a moment to celebrate our beautiful world!
To take it a step further, try to reduce the waste you create on Earth Day (and beyond!) It’s as simple as turning off the faucet or lights when you’re not using them, reaching for a refillable bottle instead of a plastic one, or bringing reusable bags to the grocery store.
Last but not least, one huge step you can take for the environment is to donate what you don’t need and shop secondhand whenever you can. Ohio Valley Goodwill makes it easy!
We accept donations of gently-used clothing, shoes, accessories, home goods, small electronics, and even cars! These items are resold in our network of retail stores at affordable prices, where the proceeds help support life-changing job training programs and employment services.
When you shop secondhand, you reduce the cycle of “fast fashion” and prevent unnecessary waste from clogging local landfills. It may sound like a small act, but it truly makes a noticeable difference!
At Ohio Valley Goodwill, we like to say that Earth Day is every day! That’s because our sustainability efforts last all year round. We care about our community, our environment, and our planet as a whole.
Ohio Valley Goodwill is more than a Cincinnati thrift store; we are a non-profit with over 100 years of community impact for individuals with disabilities, veterans, and others facing barriers to meaningful employment. We are also committed to sustainable practices as we fulfill our mission, with 44,136,722 total pounds of material recycled in 2023!
We invite you to join us in donating responsibly and shopping secondhand to help protect our planet and uplift people in our communities. Thank you for your support!
