Goodwill ® Helps People Advance Careers and Build Meaningful Lives
Every year during the first full week of May, Goodwill organizations across the United States and Canada celebrate Goodwill Industries Week to highlight the defining principle of our mission “” transforming lives through the power of work.
This year, Goodwill Industries Week runs May 5-11. While the U.S. unemployment rate has hit record lows in recent months, many communities still struggle with poverty, homelessness and lack of access to good-paying jobs. Goodwill is dedicated to equipping people to find employment, advance their careers and care for themselves and their families.
Goodwill Industries Week has been observed by local Goodwill organizations for nearly 70 years. It was first celebrated in May 1951 as a way to encourage local Goodwill organizations to educate their communities about their mission of “helping people with disabilities help themselves.”
” Goodwill Industries Week is a time to tell the stories of people we have impacted in the community,” said Joe Byrum, President and CEO of Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries. ” In the Greater Cincinnati area, we helped more than 3,500 people with disabilities and our nation’s veterans in the past year and assisted 907 to get jobs in our community. We are very proud of the personal success of these men and women.” To read more about individual success stories, visit https://www.cincinnatigoodwill.org/success-stories/.
Goodwill sells donated items in more than 3,300 stores in the United States and Canada and online at shopgoodwill.com ®. The revenue creates job placement and training programs to help people earn paychecks and build their careers. Goodwill organizations serve people with disabilities and disadvantages, older workers, youth, veterans and military families and others facing challenges to finding employment.
Eighty-seven cents of every dollar you spend at Goodwill goes back into local communities to help people build careers of significance and lives of meaning, and find self-sufficiency. Nationally, every 25 seconds of every business day, a person served by Goodwill earns a good job.
