3 Ways to Honor our Veterans on July 4th

As we all get ready to celebrate the annual Fourth of July holiday and anniversary of our nation’s independence, we’re reminded to pause and recognize all the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much to serve our country.

Goodwill Supports Veterans

Wondering what you can do to honor veterans this Fourth of July? Here are three ways to show your support and respect:

  1. Write thank-you notes

Handwritten notes are a small gesture that can go a long way. Pick out a card or make your own and write a note of thanks or encouragement to a veteran. You can drop off the notes at your local Veterans Administration or send them to another veterans organization like Operation Gratitude. Get the kids involved “” they can create drawings or paint a picture if they’re too young to write.

  1. Visit public memorials

Chances are, there are memorials or sites in your hometown dedicated to fallen heroes and veterans who passed away after service. Visit one of them and bring miniature flags, wreaths, or flowers to honor their lives and sacrifices.

  1. Support veteran employment

Leaving the military for civilian life can be a challenging process. Many veterans need guidance in gaining the skills needed to search for a job and obtain a civilian career. Unfortunately, without security and strong social support networks, some veterans are at risk of experiencing homelessness. At Ohio Valley Goodwill, we’re on a mission to change this, and you can help!

Every time you donate to Ohio Valley Goodwill or shop in our retail stores, you’re helping to support life-changing services for veterans in your community, including:

Ohio Valley Goodwill provides services for homeless veterans, helping them build their civilian careers and attain self-sufficiency. We are proud to participate in Cincinnati’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Projects (HVRP). Assistance is available for career planning, job placement, and finding housing. VA Funded ” Per Diem” Residential Program

Goodwill also operates a VA funded ” Per diem” residential program which is a program for eligible homeless veterans in need of employment assistance and intensive and holistic services in order to achieve long-term self-sufficiency. The goal of all participants is to ultimately achieve full-time employment within the community.
