Learning to be stewards of the Earth is something we can do at any age, and it’s not too early to get your children involved! Here are three fun ways to teach your kids about the importance of sustainability and help them build good ” green” habits for life:
As the weather gets warmer, it’s a great time to go on a ” clean-up” walk around your neighborhood or local park as a family. Bring a bag and gloves (or a plastic trash-picker tool) and look for litter as you walk. Your kids might be surprised at how much garbage they find! After the walk, teach your kids how to sort the garbage they collected into categories to recycle, reuse, trash, and compost. This fun activity will also help your children learn the importance of disposing of their own garbage properly.
Spring is made for gardening! Many kids love playing in the dirt and learning how to grow their own flowers, fruits, or veggies. You can even ” grow green” by using upcycled containers like cardboard milk or juice cartons as planters. It’s an easy way to show your kids how things that would normally be thrown away can be recycled and reused for a brand new purpose!
Donating to Goodwill is another practice that promotes sustainability in your community! Kids of all ages can participate in the process of donating gently-used clothes, books, and toys to Goodwill. To encourage your kids to donate, help them make their own Goodwill donation box! Break out the markers, stickers, and paint and have your kids decorate a plastic or cardboard box however they want. This will be their very own Goodwill box! When they are done decorating the box, ask your kids to look for used stuff that they no longer want or need. Explain that by donating their old things to Goodwill, they’re doing a good deed for the planet and their neighbors!
When the box is full, have your kids bring their donations to a local donation center so they can see how Goodwill will give their donations a new life in our retail stores. Tell your kids that their donations are being repurposed, and that other children will enjoy their things! Explain how Goodwill also turns donations into special training so people in your community can get jobs. Donating to Goodwill on a regular basis is a wonderful way to introduce your kids to the joy of sharing and giving!
By encouraging your children to adopt sustainable habits early in life, you’re setting them up for an eco-friendly future. We hope you’re able to try some of these fun and educational activities!
