That’s it. You’ve suffered your last cabinet avalanche! It’s time for a purge of your kitchen cabinets, and Ohio Valley Goodwill is here to help you declutter, organize, and create a more efficient kitchen space.
Here are 10 tips to help you get started:
Depending on the size and condition of your kitchen cabinets, this task can take a while. Dedicate a few hours or even a whole day to complete the process without rushing or stopping and starting.
Before you start, gather cleaning supplies such as a microfiber cloth, all-purpose cleaner, vinegar and water solution, a step stool, trash bags, storage containers, labels, and a marker.
Begin by taking everything out of the cabinets. Lay items on a countertop or table to assess their condition and decide what to keep, toss, or donate.
As you go through each item, ask yourself if it’s still in good condition, if you use it regularly, and if it serves a purpose. Create a pile for items that are still useful but you no longer need. Those items can be donated to Goodwill!
With the cabinets empty, take the time to thoroughly clean the interior surfaces. Use a damp cloth with an all-purpose cleaner or a vinegar and water solution to wipe away dust, crumbs, and grease.
Consider whether you need additional storage solutions, such as shelf inserts, drawer dividers, or organizers, to make better use of your cabinet space.
Sort your items into categories such as dishes, glassware, cookware, utensils, and food items. This will make it easier to organize and find things later.
If you use containers or bins for storage, label them clearly so you know what’s inside. This makes it easier to find what you need and helps maintain organization over time.
Take the opportunity to clean the items you’re keeping. Dishwasher-safe dishes, utensils, and glassware can go through a cycle. Wipe down the exterior of appliances and containers.
Put everything back into the cabinets in an organized manner, and consider reorganizing for increased convenience. Place frequently used items at eye level or within easy reach. Less frequently used items can be stored in higher or lower cabinets.
Once your kitchen is put back together, swing by your nearest Ohio Valley Goodwill Donation Center and drop off the items you no longer need. Your donation supports job skills training and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities in our region. What a great way to give back while decluttering your space!
Let’s make this a regular thing! Make a commitment to regularly clean and organize your cabinets to prevent clutter from building up again.
